Weʼve raised £700 to challenge the decision to allow Uptin House to be demolished and for student housing to be built in its place.

    Story

The fight to save Uptin House continues. On November 1st, the Council granted permission to allow another student block on the site which would result in the building being demolished. There were many aspects of the decision-making process which we believe were extremely poor, and we think that we might have a strong case to take the Council to a judicial review. If this was successful, it would mean the application would have to be heard again.

So we are now crowdfunding to get advice from a top planning barrister who can tell us whether there is a strong case.

The originality, quirkiness, and creative essence of the Ouseburn Valley will be eroded further by decisions of this sort.

If you care about the Ouseburn Valley, and the buildings that house its creative industries and allow small businesses to thrive there, could you put in a small amount to help us to do this?

But we are not giving up on the challenge of stopping Uptin House being demolished. The fact that the building was listed as an Asset of Community Value (just before the Planning Committee) means that it cannot be sold for 6 months,. We are developing a plan for renovating the building, and will ask the owner to consider not selling it to the developer who plans to build yet more student housing there, and will try to persuade the developer to reconsider their plans. Please email us on info@ouseburnfutures.org.uk if you want to be involved.

A big thank you forall the money sent in for this fund. Sadly the barrister’s opinion is that it would be too risky to go with a judicial review on the Planning Committee’s decision on Uptin House. It can cost around £25,0000 and unless the case is very clear, this represents a high risk case. We are extremely grateful for the support; however our target has not yet been reached and 2 Ouseburn Futures members stand to pay the balance. If anyone else can help, it would be much appreciated.

Students found this area attractive because it was quirky and based on a long history of art, culture and mixed economy. It will be ruined if the ousburn valley is only student accommodation. Think!
