On 4th August this year, Jasmin Paris and I will attempt the awesome "Classic Rock Challenge". This route links together all fifteen classic multi pitch Lakeland routes from Ken Wilson's famous book by running in between.

I have dreamed of completing this challenge for years... and I very nearly did before having my first child Isaac. My husband John and I had an amazing day out climbing almost all of the routes! We finished, not uncommonly during attempts, at the base of Black Crag in Borrowdale feeling spent and questioning whether it was wise to continue or not in the dark. That run down Borrowdale on the road at the end is a killer! We only had Troutdale Pinnacle and Little Chamonix left, with 90 mins to do them in, but we didn't think we'd finish in under 24 hrs which was our goal so we agreed to stop and try again another time.

When I was told I would never run again after having my first child, it broke my heart to think that I wouldn't get another chance to complete Classic Rock.

I have gradually worked out a way of running again and whilst slower than I used to be, I feel ready to have another attempt at Classic Rock. Jasmin loves a challenge, and didn't take much persuading to join me, so we are going to pair up for an attempt in early August (planned date the 4th). It is an inspiration to me to share this challenge with her.

On this attempt, I am enlisting the help of some friends to lead on most of the more serious routes. I have given myself permission to bike the last road section if needs be and my goal is to get round even if not within 24 hours. This really is an immense challenge for us... but its all to raise funds for the Kendal based community play area charity Outside - In Cumbria, which is set to benefit so many hundreds of children and families from ALL backgrounds and with different needs in Cumbria when it opens this October, so is very worth it. Every child and family deserves the chance to play, learn and explore in a magical space. The Lake District that so many visitors see can belie the true poverty and harsh lives many families actually face in Cumbria.
