Story
We are hoping to raise money to fund a trike with trailer adaptor for our son James.
James now 8 years old from Lee-on-the-Solent Hampshire has quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
He is desperate to strengthen his legs, as he wants the opportunity to challenge himself to a 2 mile sponsored bike ride to raise funds.
James was born with a diaphragmatic hernia which was successfully operated on at 3 days old.
A week later James' one lung collapsed and after approx 25 minutes without oxygen James was saved.
It wasn't until he was a year old that we had confirmation that James had quadriplegic cerebral palsy, the motor function part of his brain had been damaged. Thankfully all other functions were normal.
James is now realising that although academically he is as bright as his friends at his mainstream school, he can't keep up with them physically even in his adapted walker.
James can not sit or stand unaided.
But James is determined to walk!
He has variable tone so surgery is not an option unlike some other CP children but he needs to maintain leg strength just in case a miracle happens and technology advances to help him.
James has had 2 secondhand trikes which he loved to ride as fast as possible, (well as fast as I could keep up with him!) and it was excellent physio exercise for his lung as well as his legs.
But sadly he has outgrown them.
We scour the special needs secondhand sites for trikes but nothing is suitable particularly as he needs a lot of support.
James was assessed and the Tomcat Tamara Hoist User Trailer Trike with additional support was quoted at a cost of just over £3,500 but will last him into adulthood.
We all take walking and cycling for granted but for James it is a necessary exercise to keep him fit and healthy.
Please could you donate to help give James the feeling of freedom and happiness he gets from a trike instead of just being trapped in his wheelchair.

7 years agoHello everyone! Just a quick update. We are so excited as we have a date for James to receive his trike. All being well it should be lunchtime 30th March. If the weather is good James will be able to ride it home from school and show you all what you have all so kindly donated towards and of course we will post a photo on here. As you can see from the photo attached James is still keeping his legs strong but is being cheeky with it too!
