My BACKGROUND: In Brief, I became unwell in 2008 struck down with a neurological disease which completely and utterly crippled me for many years. I spent a lot of my time in hospital and in care homes and stock within the four walls of my bedroom. I became dependent on a wheelchair in 2013, I have a number of neurological symptoms and mobility issues and I’ve struggled to even walk one step in many years. However, it’s because of the wheelchair that I’ve been able to become more independent and rediscover the sports are used to do before it became unwell.
I started Para Surfing or adaptive surfing as a way for myself to get back in the water and get back on the waves like I used to, it was only by chance when in the water one day that I met a team coach involved with adaptive surfing and competition. He talked of a pathway to compete looking to adaptive surfing competition. So last summer the opportunity came up to enter the English adaptive open at the wave in Bristol, it was a completely mind-blowing experience and way more international and high-profile than I ever could have imagined. I surfed the contest as a knee surfer with the current world champion without really knowing and I placed 6th. Following that I went for my medical classification as an adaptive knee surfer in France last September. I competed the following day, placing 2nd. This ultimately led to my selection for the world championships just last December in California. As you can imagine, the 10 day event was such a bewildering and amazing experience all at once which served as a great baptism of fire to be in my first timed heat experience with priority process, tv, crowds etc. I placed 12th overall.
Overall the sport means a great deal to me and the camaraderie between the competitors and the coaches and everyone involved is just fantastic. The fact that the whole adaptive surf community has welcomed me with open arms along with the basic joy of riding waves again after being so debilitated brings me a lot of joy. I really am only just getting started and I can’t wait to see what the future holds, I would for love you to be part of this journey
