    Story

Hi, I'm Patrice, and my daughter, Kiani, and I plan to swim the channel in our local pool to raise enough money to fit a RoomMate in our beach Public Disabled Access Toilet to assist our Visually Impaired residents and visitors and we'd really love your to help us.

    Why are we doing this?
Two reasons really; the first is a simple one, as a member of Slimming World I have nearly reached my target and simply want to do something to avoid slipping back. This means I really need to do more exercise than just walking the dogs.
The only exercise I'm really into is walking so it would have been logical to walk a marathon or even run one, but all the organised ones already had their charities chosen and we wanted to support our village by raising money and awareness of the issues faced by the Visually Impaired residents and visitors of our beautiful village.

So I've chosen my biggest fear, to challenge and improve my swimming! Kiani is a cracking swimmer so she's going to be my "swim buddy" to encourage and help in the challenge as well as help in her own way.

The RoomMate provides an audio description of the layout of a Disabled Access toilet that enables the Blind user to go to the loo on their own and I think we should have one in our beach toilets.

If you haven't heard of the RoomMate then please go and have a look at the website for more details - www.adiaccess.co.uk.
It's only been available since last year but more and more people are realising what an important job it does and it's also TOTALLY a Cornish idea!

Our initial target is £585 (if we can raise more then we also plan to donate a second one to The Royal Cornwall Hospital!), before the start we managed to raise £370 at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/patrice-hassell-channel-challenge before the 30 days ran out.

This is now the official page..

So, if you think that our Visually Impaired visitors should have the same rights as our wheelchair bound visitors, please help.

Hi Folks and thank you so much for your help so far. My old page expired today so we have done a totally new one to cover the next 89 days of the Channel Challenge to help fund the remaining money we need to get our RoomMates. If you can help that would be fantastic, either by pledging yourself, passing the details on to your friends and family, BUT..! also if you know any businesses who might be interested in donating a gift that we could auction at the end of the challenge that would also be incredible. Thanks again

I am a full time ambulance technician and my daughter is a nurse at Royal Cornwall Hospital. Why am I doing this? I am realistic enough to know equal rights for everyone is often just a pipedream but with RoomMate we can at least improve some peoples lives so why wouldn't I?
