    Story

In late November 2016, Penlee Lifeboat Coxswain, Patch Harvey, located the Newlyn built counter-stern lugger, PZ 134 Ocean Pride, once owned by his Grandfather, Ted 'Chuggy' Downing, in a very poor state at a boatyard in Rye Harbour, Sussex.

The Ocean Pride (PZ134) was built in Peake's Shipyard at Tolcarne Quay, Newlyn in 1919. She is the only counter-stern Mount's Bay lugger remaining and was the last boat built on Tolcarne Beach.

She has important links to Newlyn's maritime heritage - specifically fishing and boat building. Newlyn has a thriving and vibrant working harbour, with its industrial roots dating back to the 16th century. The Ocean Pride (registered in 1920) was originally commisioned by the Brownfield family of Mousehole for use in Whitby with the herring fleet. However she spent many years fishing for pilchards and mackerel out of Mousehole & Newlyn, and saw 2nd World War service out of Padstow.

The Ocean Pride is now at genuine risk of being scrapped, if we can't bring her back to Newlyn this wonderful old girl will be lost for ever. She's the last of her kind and is almost 100 years old - a unique vessel that deserves a new life. Please help us to bring her home.

The Ocean Pride is now back in Newlyn and is sitting comfortably in her restoration area at Sandy Cove. Our fundraising continues so that we can purchase a boat shelter, generator, power tools and a double ended shipping container. It seems like a never ending shopping list but we’ve made amazing progress over the last 6 months. The Ocean Pride will get to celebrate her 100th birthday!

Some really good news...thanks to all your generous donations we now have enough money to transport PZ 134 Ocean Pride back home to Newlyn. She will be arriving at Sandy Cove on Tuesday 5 December - the extensive restoration work required to bring her back to life will then commence so please keep donating. Thank you 😊
