Story

Cabinz CIC announces the formation of possibly the worlds' first hardware and fixings distribution network with reused plastic packaging, which aims to encourage the repair of products and creative reuse of materials, with a supply of fixings, that are not usually available cheaply

We need funding to help market and distribute this hardware and fixings

These fixings come from split boxes, returns and clearance stock from large manufacturers such as Timco, Wickes and Travis Perkins, that may otherwise be recycled or landfilled.

Cabinz distribute the hardware with support from construction companies like Wates, Galliford Try and Flintshire Council. Organisations such as Scrapstores. Men in Sheds and Allotment groups have been invited to be members of the network Cabinz CIC .

Cabinz has piloted the sorting of mixed screws as a 'safe space' therapy activity with local charities, Woodwork to Wellness and Autism Together with their autistic users, and this network will build on this work.

Plastic Reuse

A recent boost to the project has been access to 20,000 small boxes at very low cost, allowing delivery to users with packaging inserts made from reused plastic bottles

Cabinz CIC have also been working for over year with Recipro, a paint reuse hub to reuse their used plastic paint pots for storing and posting fixings. Plastic ice cream tubs are also collected for reuse from the Wepre park cafe.

This plastic reuse leads on from other Cabinz initiatives like Shelter Banks . In 5 years Cabinz have reused over 230 tonnes of composite plastic door off cuts from Vista panels Ltd that cannot be recycled, only reused or landfilled.

These have been used to build organic chicken coops , green houses and insulated sheds

Cabinz also wish to expand their wilder ideas like small metal nuts, bolts screws, nails & other building materials fixings to be as currency in the developing world or disaster areas

When contacted, staff at the Museum of the Royal Mint said it was an 'interesting idea'.
