Story
In 2024 Claire wrote a report for Healthwatch Liverpool on the experiences that people who had survived sexual trauma have when attending health care appointments. The report included powerful statistics about the numbers of people affected by sexual trauma and the impact on their health as well as survivor’s own experiences. The report made recommendations of what might help improve these and help survivors to feel safer to access healthcare.
After the publication of that report, Claire worked with health partners and others to develop a pilot project to take forward these recommendations. In this project staff will be trained in how to support survivors and to provide trauma cards which empower survivors to discretely disclose that they have experienced trauma and what support they may need.
This pilot will take place in gynaecology outpatients at Liverpool Women's Hospital, Special Care Dentistry at the Dental Hospital, and within Brownlow Primary Care Network. We hope it will then spread throughout local services and that one day survivors will be able to trust that all of their healthcare professionals will know how to respond to their needs.
Funding will pay for Train the Trainer training by the Survivors Trust, building up a pool of local staff able to roll out the training ensuring that the work Claire sparked can continue and make a difference for many people. The target has been updated now that we have more details of the training for 10 people. Its a big target but people have been so generous already. Any additional monies will be donated to The Reader, the largest shared reading charity in the UK in recognition of Claire's passion for reading.
This feels like a beautiful way to continue Claire’s work and passion for making a difference to people’s lives
