Story
I’m trying to set up a support group for Polycystic Ovarian Sufferers. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a disease which impacts hugely on the lives of women across the UK but is largely ignored by the mainstream media. Funding for research and support groups is incredibly difficult to come by, despite the fact that as many 1 in 10 women may be suffering some of the effects of PCOS.
Teenagers are often diagnosed with PCOS between the ages of 13-18. The syndrome is especially distressing for children and young women. In a week where the bullying and harassment of young women has been highlighted, it is worth reflecting on the suffering of young girls who are diagnosed with PCOS. The side effects include:
• irregular periods or no periods at all
• difficulty getting pregnant (because of irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate)
• excessive hair growth (hirsutism) – usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks
• weight gain
• thinning hair and hair loss from the head
• oily skin or acne
There is currently no support group or meeting space in South Yorkshire.
The money raised will be used to fund the provision of a meeting space and support hub for our first meetings and professionally designed website. Sheffield MP Nick Clegg fully endorses our campaign. We will show how the funding raised has been used on our Facebook page and website.
We have already booked our first meeting at St Andrew's United Reformed Church on Upper Hanover Street, 20th January 2017.
Please help us to get our support group up and running.
Thank you in advance.
Kayleigh.
