Story

The Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit (PDRU) is a neurological rehabilitation unit in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Patients come to PDRU following a neurological injury which can affect the brain, spinal cord or nerves. The patients here can have difficulties with communicating, moving, and taking care of themselves. The unit provides intensive rehabilitation through therapy sessions to work on retraining these skills and patients are taught how to live more independent lives. It is a vital resource that serves the whole of the west coast of Scotland. Patients in PDRU can be in hospital for a number of weeks away from their friends and family and this adds to the stress of being in hospital.

As part of the unit there is a small garden area which is bare and uninspiring. It’s mostly grass which is not wheelchair or walking aid friendly. Patients enjoy being outside but our current garden is inaccessible for most of our patients.

However with your help we can change things……

We have a team of garden contractors ready to help landscape the space into something that is accessible, inspiring and invigorating for patients. A place where they can take their families during visiting times, relax between therapy sessions, reflect on the challenging journey ahead or just enjoy a bit of elusive Scottish sunshine.

We are fundraising for £2500 to transform our tired garden and need donations to achieve our target. The contractors are providing free labour but will need the materials to undertake this project.

You can help by donating the following:

£20 to sponsor a slab

£10 to buy compost

£5 to buy a plant pot

£2.50 to buy a bedding plant

Raising this target will help us achieve our target of making this garden a patient friendly space ready to be enjoyed in summer 2021.

The project is organised by PD4RU who are a support group formed by ex-patients and their families. They have first-hand experience of being in the unit and how this garden transformation could benefit the patients. They have successfully fundraised for equipment and resources for the unit before but this is their biggest challenge yet and they can’t do it without you!

All donations are made to NHS GG&C endowment fund CG0807 which is a fund solely for the patients of PDRU. It is used for fundraising to make a PDRU hospital stay that little bit easier for patients and their relatives.
