Pennies for St Denys
St Denys church Aswarby is a beautiful grade 1 listed church with historical significance. It attracts visitors from all over the world especially from Australia. They visit to see the birth place of George Bass, after whom the Bass Strait is named, who was christened in the church, in the same 12th century Norman font that is still used today. His father, who was a church warden, lies in the church yard.
The church is in need of urgent repairs, A structural survey revealed a number of major problems with the tower and spire, the chancel and nave roofs, the south porch and drainage. Urgent work was undertaken in 2016 to make the building safe for use.
We have been successful in securing a grant of £219,087 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards urgently needed repairs to its spire, tower and drainage.
The grant has been made possible by National Lottery players and will support urgently needed repairs after the building was forced to close two years ago.
This is in addition to the £22,900 development grant awarded in April 2016. The money has been awarded through HLF’s Grants for Places for Worship programme. But since applying for the grant we have also fallen foul to the people who decided they liked the lead off the roof better than we do, so amongst the £30,000 we need to raise to fulfil our obligations to the HLF we also need funds for repairs to keep it standing for future generations.
Any amount you can donate, however small, will help towards the repair work urgently needed.
Thankyou.
