    Story

Kakrigu Mfangano Primary School in Lake Victoria, Kenya, is taking part in a green revolution - growing food using permaculture principles in a garden that was started by the students and teachers. We need your help to build a rainwater catchment system so the school can increase its garden and feeding programme, and teach the wider community about permaculture.

    Benefits of the garden
The garden provides fresh, healthy food for the children, with variety and reliability that is hard to come by in this part of Kenya, where crops often fail due to unpredictable weather patterns.

It doesn't stop with providing nutritious food; everyone in the school - the kids and the teachers - gets involved, learning drought-resilient, sustainable and organic methods of growing food. The knowledge and practical skills they learn here can be taken home to their families, and improves their opportunities for the future.

    How can you help?
The headteacher and coordinator of the permaculture project, Bernard, is keen to set up a rainwater collection system, to water the plants and provide clean water to drink (currently relying on polluted lake water, fetched daily by students)

The fundraising target will allow for:
    £850 for 2x water tanks @ £425 each
    £550 for 50x gutters @ £11 each
£130 to hire a local plumber to install the system
£34 for 4 bags of cement (tank base)
    £9 sand (tank base)
    £68 transportation
    £83 admin (JustGiving fees)

    Future plans
The school wants to benefit the whole community, opening the garden up to run classes for the local community. This will allow them to share skills that will help local families to support themselves through difficult times and with the effects of climate change. There is already a lot of interest.

    Mfangano Island
The island is home to around 20,000 people, most of whom rely on fish to eat. The lake is drastically overfished, not to mention polluted. Most people use the lake for bathing, washing and drinking water.

I travelled to Kenya for three months to learn about techniques that help people to deal with the effects of climate change. I was introduced to permaculture and am now taking a course and want to share my passion for nature, to help the people I met and their communities.
