Story

Who?

The St Stephens Society was set up by Jackie Pullinger in 1981. Jackie Pullinger is a missionary who has been out in Hong Kong since 1966. The society, in their own words, ‘exists to preach the gospel, reach the poor and see people set free through faith in Jesus Christ. Our heart is to go to the ends of the earth to make disciples.’ They have various rehab centres around Honk Kong which house around 200-300 recovering/recovered drug addicts, young and old, as well all volunteers who work with them. They also have various youth and children’s programmes as well as outreach into the city, praying and providing those who are vulnerable.

What?

I have been invited to work in one of the St Stephen’s Society rehab centres in New Territories in Hong Kong for 7 months starting this September. My time there will, as far as I am aware, consist of: time with the young people, getting to know them (and hopefully learning Cantonese) as well as doing bible studies, sport etc; time with the older addicts, praying and caring for them whilst they are recovering; time on the streets doing outreach, and finally; time exploring Hong Kong, getting to know the city, and enjoying the beautiful landscape doing walks around New Territories (a large part of which is national park).

Why?

My main motivation is the opportunity it will give me to explore my Christian faith in a completely new context. I have heard many testimonies about the St Stephens Society, and Jackie Pullinger's work from Jackie Pullinger's 'Crack in the Wall' and 'Chasing the Dragon', as well as many who've worked with them, or know people who do. It is an amazing story of God's provision and faithfulness and it will to be a part of all that they are doing, learning about how to share the gospel practically and effectively in a very challenging environment.
