Story
In 2022, listeners to the We Have Ways of Making You Talk podcast came together to support the Polish Heritage Flight and the emergency they faced with Spitfire BM597. After a very hectic summer and scorching tarmac runways, both mainwheel tyres need to be replaced at short notice.
The Independent Company came to their aid and subsequently, we have formed a close bond with the PHF, allowing us the opportunity to jointly organise a number of special events.
This year, the Independent Company have an amazing opportunity to come together again to sponsor PHFs latest addition, a Mk.IX Spitfire which will fly in the colours of Polish 302 Squadron and, in particular, pilot Michael J Murayda.
Michael was a US volunteer of Polish decent from Akron, Ohio. Notably Michael flew his Spitfire taking part in operation Overlord and operation Neptune on D-Day. For his service with 302 squadron, he was awarded the Polish Cross of Valour by the exiled Polish government.
As enthusiasts, we are indebted to the private owners who continually fund these aeroplanes. The extensive maintenance activities required to keep them airworthy along with insurance and other costs required take their toll.
Speaking with PHF, there will be opportunities for all contributors during the next year for 'up-close' photo opportunities and cockpit sits and a 'Polish Airforce Day' is in its early stages of planning for 2025 when it is hoped we can bring all of the supporters together for a very special event to celebrate the 'Independent Company Spitfire'.
I hope you will agree that this is an exciting opportunity to 'give a little back' for all the enjoyment they bring and I hope you will join me in contributing.
