    Story

A stripped gear wheel on a sub-standard (but very expensive) dry sump pump has killed my engine after only 1000 miles. Sadly due to passage of time since purchase time I have no recourse with the supplier.

My predicament does however present opportunities. I have a brand new Audi 1.8 turbo engine to fit but I have the engineering problem of sourcing and fitting an incompatible non-Audi gearbox for my rear wheel drive configuration (No suitable Vw/Audi/Seat/Skoda gearboxes exist). The project is of interest to the wider kit car community as the existing gearboxes of choice from the Ford Sierras and Escorts of last century become rare, expensive and too weak for powerful modern engines.

My choice is to mate the Audi engine with a more modern, affordable and readily available gearbox. Research has lead me to select the 6-speed gearbox from a Mazda RX8. The conversion requires the design and fabrication of a conversion plate to fit between the engine and gearbox. If successful, I will publicise my project, making the CAD file available to others and the conversion will open up a new transmission option to kit car owners. The project will have significant additional costs with necessary redesign of exhaust, cooling and fueling systems, along with bodywork modifications.
