Story

Polly Bryder will be going on a 'True Adventure' expedition to Cambodia in 2020 with her school, Midhurst Rother College, and 'Better Lives'; the charity organisation that Polly and the team will work with during their expedition. In order to do so, Polly needs to raise £2750.00!

Polly and the rest of the team will be involved with one of the following tasks:

Building a family toilet;

Many families don't have toilets at their homes and those who do have toilets often use unsafe "straight drop" toilets where the user stands on a platform directly over a deep pit. Peaksneng (a 'Better Lives' partner) and Healthy Life Reinforcement collaborate with qualifying families to build safe and sanitary toilets. Each toilet reduces the occurance of open defacation, which has negative health consequences for everyone in the community. The toilets also protect local water quality and provide a safe alternative to the "straight drop."

Building a family water tank;

Cambodia's drastic seasons make it difficult for families to manage year-round water access. Water tanks help families collect precious rainfall during the dry seasons and save water during the transition from rainy season to dry season. Access to basic resources is the first step on the path to self-reliance. Improving water access improves a family's ability to grow vegetables, improve their health, and earn income.

Compost Boxes;

Nutrient-rich organic compost is the foundation to a healthy vegetable garden. When compost is covered it retains heat and moisture, which helps it decompose quickly. Currently, the organisations use plastic sheets for covering, which is expensive and has a short life-span. Wooden compost boxes reduce the ongoing cost of compost production and are more environmentally sustainable than plastic sheets.

Community Sanitation;

Peaksneng is building and operating an affordable housing project near their farm. The objective of the project is to help poor families own their own land and home so they can begin building wealth to improve their children's futures. As the community grows, so does its sanitation needs. Peaksneng is preparing to improve the community's sanitation infrastructure by laying a network of pipes. Polly and the rest of the team will have the opportunity to help them break ground on this important community initiative!
