    Story

When did you last wear a pair of Budgie Smugglers?

On the 11th February 2017, our Porthtowan surf boat crew (& Mark Slater SUP paddling Hellman) will don speedos for good cause, swimming a combined 3.5km in the icy waters of Loch Lomond near Glasgow. The International Ice Swimming Championships requires swimmers to wear only swim gear (speedos, hat, goggles) and the water temperature is likely to be below 2 degrees.

The sea in Cornwall will not get much below 8 degrees this winter and that feels pretty chilly even in a wetsuit, so we are getting acclimatised.

Your sponsorship will go a long way:

Half will go to the Mercy Rescue Trust, a Cornish based charity which supports a Kenyan orphanage. Last year we raised £350 so a small child called Mickey could get his Achilles tendon operation. We would like to do even better this year to support this fantastic charity.

The other half will go towards a replacement for Blue Bali, our tired surfboat. She is 14 years old and has been rolled, sunk and pitch-poled down the face of too many waves. This is crucial for the growth of the club, which will mean continued success in local, national and international races.

Whilst you are sitting in the warmth, please help make our pain worthwhile and take a minute to sponsor us. Any amount is appreciated...it all adds up.

Keep an eye on this page for updates, photos and to see if the crew survived.

Happy Christmas from Team Ice Blue Bali.

Now the fingers have thawed out I can post an update. The event was incredible, the ice swimmers know how to organise things, even down to the bagpipes! The water was 4.2 on the day and the air around 3. It was windy giving us some unexpected chop for extra challenge. The adrenaline took over the cold temporarily, but the after-drop was heavy for all of us, especially Tom who spent some time in the ambulance. An intensly satisfying weekend! Thank you for the donations. This page (but not this chapter) will close on Saturday.

Three days to go and apparently a 'Killer Freeze' is on the way, if you believe the tabloids... Well we didn't want it to be easy!

Five days to go! Thanks so much for the donations so far, great to see we've passed halfway. Training has been going well: Cold showers, dips in the paddling pool and regular quarry swims are really helping with acclimatisation and learning to swim... Thanks to Paul Abbitt for the photo below. It sums up the after-effects of a 14 minute swim in Carn Marth quarry. Nick is trying to look normal while Pete and Ed are in a strange drunken state in the background. How much worse can it be in Loch Lomond?!
