Akwaaba in Hackney is a volunteer-run social centre for refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants. It seeks to reduce social isolation, build lasting relationships between new and established members of the community, offer practical and emotional support to vulnerable migrants, and foster solidarity and cohesion in a diverse London neighbourhood.

On a regular Sunday, Akwaaba is visited by ten or more families, including upwards of 25 children. With money raised, we hope to contribute towards (i) bus fares for visitors experiencing destitution so that they can come to Akwaaba on a regular basis, attend organising meetings and occasional Akwaaba outings and (ii) materials and equipment for children's activities during Akwaaba sessions.

Akwaaba means WELCOME in the Twi language of Ghana. As we three take on the Hackney Half Marathon (end of April), we hope you will join us in supporting a group of volunteers who do just that, provide the warmest of welcomes to those who seek it.
