❤NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY- MITOCHONDRIAL RESEARCH FUND❤

Firstly, we have been following the story of beautiful Zahra who was born in South Africa in May 2016. Shortly after birth doctors noticed Zahra was floppy and she was taken to ICU. She went on to have numerous routine tests which came back negative and so Zahra's parents quickly started to realise there was something very wrong. They found out at 8 weeks old that Zahra had mitochondrial disease which is a progressive and life limiting disease that affects how our bodies produce the energy needed to sustain life. It can lead to brain damage, blindness, deafness and other organ failure. Children born with mitochondrial disease rarely live into adolescence and there is currently no cure....

Doctors told Zahra' parents that she needed specialised genetic testing in the US or UK. Zahra's mum is from Aberystwyth and so they returned here to the UK to seek medical help. The Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research based in Newcastle have been a massive support to Zahra and her family and have held their hands through some really tough times. The centre has an amazing team of doctors and scientists who really are doing some incredible work. Take a look at their video: https://youtu.be/flGNYHxNAgM

Currently, the initial genetic testing has yielded no results for Zahra and so she has been accepted into a wider research programme. This ultimately means that Zahra's family are left with no diagnosis and unanswered questions about her quality of life. Last year, a group of dedicated family members and friends 'Zahras' Runners': www.justgiving.com/fundraising/zahrasrunners ran marathons in the UK and across the globe to help raise money for the Wellcome Centre. To date they have raised an AMAZING £8,055.16 so please help us to help them and raise even more money to give hope to children and families like Zahra's. Watch Zahra's video here: 365 days of Zahra
