Story

ISEP’s community project this year is about installing green screens at Prior Weston Primary school. The school has recently received a GLA air quality audit. The only recommendation for the school that will directly reduce pollution in the playgrounds is to install green screens. The school has already taken all other possible actions, including many anti-idling events and awareness raising lessons. Only 2% of pupils are driven to school and none of the staff drive in.

There are over 2600 vehicles per day on core roads within 200m of the school. NO2 levels in the playgrounds exceed the legal limit of 40micrograms/cubic metre (in the worst quartile of all schools in London). A study by GLA/Defra has found that green screens reduce pollution in playgrounds during school hours by 36% for NO2 and 41% for PM10.

It is difficult to predict health benefits from pollution reductions. However a long term study in Stockholm showed that reducing NO2 pollution by 5-10% reduced the rate of asthma attacks by 12% within 7 months and by 47% after a few years.

Therefore we want to help the school install as much green screening as possible. Beyond the air quality impacts the green screens will improve biodiversity in the local area, providing much needed habitat for insects, plus improve the pupils privacy and be beautiful for them to look at.

We've already raised nearly £200 offline - how much can you help?
