Story
The ‘Gogo’ Project in Mbare, Zimbabwe.
Global Health Dorcas Initiative seeks to support vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing basic food supplies, basic hygiene goods, books and toys for children, and mental health support. We support Grandmothers and the children they support, as well as struggling families.
We have taken a gendered approach, as women carry the heaviest burden in our society, many homes are female led and these women are as resilient as they are vulnerable.
Our grandmothers (Gogo) who are carefully selected, look after orphans and live in dire poverty. Most of these children’s parents are either deceased or have migrated within the region. We also support youth led families.
Before COVID-19, our grandmothers had already been living hand to mouth, the pandemic has drastically reduced their daily income. Many are living in overcrowded conditions which exposes them to health and social challenges that make it difficult to maintain basic hygiene.
We NEED your help to support these vulnerable families.
Each Gogo is looking after five or more grandchildren, they receive $20 (US dollars) worth of groceries to help feed their families, with support from our Community Champions in Zimbabwe.
Our Community Champions on the ground who are Mbare residents and know the community well, are a strong and diverse group of men and women whom we support through the mentoring and mental health awareness programmes.
THANK YOU to all who are helping on the ground and abroad.
We are keen to support more grandmothers, please kindly donate whatever you can to our fund.
Again, THANK YOU very much for your kind generosity and support to our cause!
