Story

Over 150 World War 2 Aircrew will take to the air once more on Sunday 21 June 2020 when they fly to a reunion at a former wartime airfield at Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport. They will team up with 120 volunteer, present-day private pilots and their light aircraft to be ferried into the former RAF Halfpenny Green from all over the British Isles.

The event - known as “Project Propeller” and now in its 22nd year - is run by a small group of volunteers who coordinate all the veterans' flights, arrange the support facilities and lay on street party refreshments complete with 1940's-style live musical entertainment.

The veterans all saw action during the war and served in every crew position from Pilot to Rear Gunner - the iconic “Tail End Charlie”.

Mostly in their nineties, but with a few over 100, these extraordinary aviators love getting airborne again, recalling their adventures and renewing the bonds of comradeship formed over 70 years ago.

It is our privilege and pleasure to stage this annual event for the men and women of the "greatest generation" to whom we all owe so much. However, Project Propeller costs almost £6000 each year to stage. It is a non-profit event and relies entirely on public support for its finance.

Our first Just Giving appeal for the event at Gloucester Airport raised £1070, the second in 2019 raised £1129 and we are very grateful to all those who supported us so generously. Any donation to this second campaign – big or small - will be used to keep Project Propeller running for as long as we have enough veterans who are able and willing to participate.

If you prefer, cheques payable to 'Project Propeller' can be sent to Project Propeller, 34 Dorset Square, London NW1 6QJ.

When the organisation is eventually wound up, any remaining funds will be donated to Royal Air Force charities .

Thank you for your support.
