Story
LGBTQ+ people do not feel protected by the main organisations in psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy. It is getting harder and harder for LGBTQ+ people, our parents, our friends and our allies to know where to go to access professional psychological input and opinion that is safe, effective and ethical. Which individuals, approaches and organisations can we trust?
This has to change.
PSIIQC will conduct and interpret research, respond to changes in legislation, highlight injustices and discrimination, and set standards for psychological practice with LGBTQ+ people. We will achieve this by taking our lead from the extant LGBTQ+ organisations to develop standards of practice that insist on equality, efficacy and excellence for children, adults and older adults. This will allow us to maintain an accessible directory of approved individuals and organisations who offer psychological services to LGBTQ+ individuals and the public. The amazing LGBTQ+ organisations that already support our communities will be in control of those standards, it is their training courses (not ours) which will provide access to the directory. In this way the standards set will always reflect the needs of LGBTQ+ people and they will move with the times, whilst guaranteeing and foregrounding the role of those vital organisations in our communities.
We are open to LGBTQ+ and ally psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counsellors, qualified coaches and psychology users from other professions (e.g. social workers, teachers, managers, nurses, clinicians), and anyone who shares our values of inclusion of trans and nonbinary identities, self-representation and diversity.
The funds will pay for essential, non-donatable things like our registered office, insurance, secure digital workspace, membership management software and will go towards events and resources that will be of use to members and the public. All the work and expertise in PSIIQC is/are being donated on a voluntary basis, we are a not-for-profit organisation and we will work towards an appropriate framework of incorporation.
Thank you xxx
