A BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING PROJECT IN THE HEART OF NEPAL THAT PRESERVES NATIVE PLANTS, INSPIRES LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND PROTECTS THE NATURAL HABITAT
Founded in 2012 by Purna Gurung, the Garden was started to preserve native plants of Nepal; rare ornamentals, potent medicinals, and those in danger of vanishing forever. The idea, originating from Purna’s love for plants and a long-lasting fascination with organic farming and permaculture, has been evolving for some years to finally take the shape of a Garden in the Himalayas.
Our vision is to initiate a long-term awareness project that preserves native plants and educates the locals about the importance of protecting their natural habitat. Ironically, in a country of astonishing natural beauty, not much attention is being paid to nature itself, unless it involves practical use.
The project's aim is to:
Preserve the native plants of Nepali flora before they disappear forever
Educate about the local flora and the impact it has on ecosystems
Inspire the young generation to preserve native species, protect their natural habitat, and grow their gardens
We also aim to help introduce variety and enrich the diet of local people by encouraging them to grow vegetables and fruit that have been forgotten or are not cultivated in the region in their kitchen gardens.
The money raised will go towards the salary of;
1 full-time gardener
1 part-time gardener
1 full-time herbalist
1 full-time educator
1 full-time co-ordinator
We want the Garden in the Himalayas to grow and flourish for the benefit of the local community and the wider world. We believe that showing new ways along with employing old wisdom is the best way to initiate a meaningful and lasting change.
And here are the plans:
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND EDUCATION
We'd love to involve local schools by running awareness workshops, plant identification, drawing contests, etc. Establishing a Garden in the Himalayas as an information center on organic methods of cultivation, permaculture and native plants of Nepal is another. Running horticulture training and demonstrating that looking after plants can be an occupation (hotels, resorts, public gardens, community gardens) is an ambition that begs to be fulfilled in a country of such amazing gardening potential. Introducing garden design is the next job on hand.
