Story

On Saturday, 25 February 2023, 40 Queen's University Belfast Boat Club members will complete 100K IN JUST ONE DAY to raise money to support our club and local depression charity, AWARE NI. (Total raised will be split equally between club and charity).

The Challenge - 3 Million Metres (#3MM):

We have challenged ourselves to complete 100KM in 1 day and with 40 members planning to take part; overall, we hope to complete over 3 million metres! #3MM

-A group of athletes will complete a marathon on the rowing machine and the remaining distance on a spin bike, with one of these athletes hoping to break the Irish and British record,

-A peloton of rowers will complete a 100K cycle across Northern Irish terrain,

-And another group will complete 100K across a range of disciplines, including a session in boats on the River Lagan.

Many of our beginner athletes are teaming up to complete the 100K together...and we hope to have special appearances from some of our coaches!

We'll also be posting regular updates in the lead-up and on the day of the event itself, so please make sure to follow our Instagram page (@qubrowing)!

The Goal - £5000:

Our aim is to raise a total of £5000 - this is approximately £125 per member completing the challenge. For AWARE NI, a share of £2500 could allow them to run 25 support groups each lasting a week! The other £2500 would greatly support student athletes in attending competitions, improving our access to training resources and supporting our fantastic volunteer coaching team.

The Charity - AWARE NI:

AWARE NI is an incredible charity based in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry. Volunteers manage a network of 23 support groups across urban and rural areas in NI which welcome people with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder as well as their carers. AWARE NI also deliver mental health and well-being courses in communities, education centres and workplaces. Members of QUB rowing have completed AWARE NI's Mental Health First Aid course as improving the welfare and support network within our club is of upmost importance. AWARE NI's work is extremely meaningful, and we are excited to support such an amazing cause. Click HERE for more information about AWARE NI's services!

The Club - Queen's University Rowing:

Rowing at Queen's is a massive aspect of student life. The club is forever growing, and every year we challenge ourselves more and more.

Some highlights from the 2022 season include placing 3rd overall university at the British University Rowing Championships (BUCS) and having 5 of our members race for Ireland and Great Britain internationally, bringing home 4 medals. This year we have set even more ambitious goals, and we greatly appreciate your support in helping us achieve them.

50% of the money raised from this event will allow our club to continue supporting its incredibly hard working student athletes. Whether they are a complete beginner, intermediate, recreational or international athlete; we want to encourage everyone to become the best rowers they can be and we are so proud of every achievement along the way!

We are all very excited (...and nervous) for the challenge, but with teamwork and determination, we are confident we will be successful! And we are incredibly grateful for any donation, no matter how big or small.

Thank you so much for your support!
