Story
6th June 2024 will be the eightieth anniversary of the D-Day landings.
To commemorate this event, we are planning to make eighty single bed sized patchwork quilts. These quilts will be distributed by Poppy Appeal Yorkshire to veterans living in Royal British Legion care homes, and to those being cared for in their own homes.
We are in the process of raising funds for materials - the total cost of the quilts will be around £4000 - and will also be scheduling a number of making days so that we can get started on sewing.
If you are local to Sheffield, you would be welcome to join us on a making day. If not, but you would still like to do some sewing, you can send us your completed quilt, or even a quilt top, which we can back and bind for you. The quilts we will be making will be 135cm by 200cm / 52" x 78", but you are welcome to donate a quilt of any size. All quilts must be cotton, please, so that they will stand laundry. A majority of the veterans are likely to be male, so you may want to keep that in mind when selecting your fabrics.
Alternatively, if you would like to donate some fabric, or make a financial donation towards materials, both would be gratefully received.
We are planning to update regularly with details of upcoming events and progress towards our goal.
