Story
This is Harrison's story - please take a minute to read his journey.
At just 23 weeks and 6 days gestation, weighing only 1.7 lbs, Harrison burst into the world. For the first 7 months of his life he was in a specialist hospital and there were many days we didn't think he would pull through. When he did come home the care was endless; appointments, follow ups, physio to name a few. But all of this was done to provide him with the best and most normal life possible.
Harrison is now 13 years old, he has cerebral palsey in all four of his limbs, cortical visual impairment and autism.
Harrison has undergone multiple surgeries on his bowel, spinal cord and most recently surgery to both hips where the pelvis was broken and reset. As you can imagine, no sooner one operation is overcome, the next one is just around corner.
The next operation is shortly approaching, this time, the operation is on both of his feet which are collapsing due to the cerebral palsey. Currently he can walk using a walker or tripod stick with an adult but only short distances and relies heavily on his wheel chair. Harrison's home has also been specially adapted for ground floor/wheel chair access. Harrisons wheel chair isnt for fun it's an essential piece of equipment. It's his independence.
The issue is that as he grows and his needs and abilities alter, the current chair then becomes unfit for purpose. Most charities can help with a wheelchair, but they are all standardised and not designed for sitting in for prolonged hours like Harrison needs to.
Most are also shipped from abroad, relying on estimated measurements and video calls.
So, we've found a company who will build Harrison a bespoke wheel chair. Including features that he needs such as right wheel drive and personalised height adjustment so he is able to reach the brakes and foot plate himself. It is also manufactured in the UK so any issues and servicing can be done a lot more easily. The wheels are top of the range for bouncy curbs and the seat is designed to be comfortable for all day sitting. Harrison loves gaming and they've said they will dip it with his favorite characters also. This wheel chair should last 5 years.
Wheelchair services can provide a voucher towards the cost, the issue is that the voucher covers only a small amount of the total and it has a short expiry date. When the voucher expires you have to go right back to the beginning again which entails constant phone calls before you are added to the 4-6 months waiting list and hear anything back.
To aid Harrison rehabilitation wise, he has regular physio and swimming therapy sessions at a cost of £105, which is all funded independently by Harrison's family and not by the NHS.
What we are asking for is your help, however big or small, to raise funds to cover the total cost of the bespoke wheelchair. Whilst the up and coming operation is vital for the next stage of his development, we need this wheel chair to provide him comfort and some further independence before we tackle that next uphill climb.
He is the most gorgeous boy and his dream is to walk independently and get on a roller coaster.
Until that day and in the wise words of Mario "Let's - a - go!"
