Story

On the 18th June 2021 I will set off from Land’s End on a gruelling 874 mile run to John o’ Groats. The aim is to raise funds to create a foundation that will enable ex service personnel and their families to have a staycation in North Cornwall. All money raised will go towards a holiday home to be used by ex-military that have struggled to transition into civilian life.

I have served in the British Army for the past 14 years and continue to do so, I have witnessed first-hand the effects of active duty on one’s health and wellbeing both mentally and physically. The Mental Health Foundation estimates 5 million veterans in the UK with 20,000 personnel leaving each year. It is common for veterans to develop mental health problems after leaving service, many of whom will experience PTSD. Veteran’s mental health may be made worse due to the stress of transitioning which can then lead to difficulties in relationships, a higher risk of suicide, alcohol misuse and homelessness.

It may not seem like much, but I think everyone deserves a chance to take a little time away – either on their own or with their family. Increasingly, not everyone can afford to do this. Studies show that just 6 days away can help reduce stress, boost the immune system and is generally good for all aspects of health.

I am a proud Cornishman and know how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place with award winning beaches and brilliant hospitality. I want to share this place I call home with veterans from all walks of life who are in need of a little R & R.

I am gratefully accepting any donations with all proceeds going to help ex-service personnel. Find me on Facebook, @stravalejogchallenge and Instagram @lejogchallenge to follow my training journey.

Best, Richard.
