    Story

At the Rabbit Welfare Foundation, we are dedicated to promoting the rights, health, welfare and wellbeing of rabbits across the UK.

There are between 900,000 and 1.5 million pet rabbits living in the UK, making them our third most popular pet after cats and dogs. But despite their popularity, rabbits are among the most neglected and misunderstood of our pets.

Around half of all rabbits live alone, a quarter live in inadequate housing, a fifth have insufficient diets, and around half do not have access to appropriate, specialist veterinary care. This makes rabbits vulnerable to loneliness, isolation, and depression, as well as susceptible to myriad physical health conditions.

More than this, around 67,000 rabbits are relinquished each year in the UK, with only a small percentage rescued by animal welfare organisations and charities. Many are released into the wild, where they are vulnerable to predators, extreme weather conditions and the dangers of urban life.

The Rabbit Welfare Foundation seeks to change this. We actively campaign for the rights of rabbits, and provide advice, guidance, education and services to promote their health, welfare and wellbeing among rabbit carers.

We are building our UK network. We will work in conjunction with specialist rabbit veterinary providers to provide the best care advice and guidance, as well as animal welfare charities, animal welfare legal organisations, environmental groups, local authorities, and government departments, such as DEFRA and the Home Office, to raise awareness of rabbit rights and enforce rabbit welfare standards.

We're a small charity with big ambitions. Our five year plan includes opening our very own national rabbit rescue in the UK, complete with an on-site specialist rabbit veterinary centre for our rescues. We will work to build this practice into a Centre of Excellence for Rabbit Care and Welfare, and open an educational and activities facility, whereby rabbit carers can come to learn about rabbits, make rabbit-safe toys and snacks, and help in our sustainable garden where we will grow the vegetables necessary for optimal rabbit nutrition.

Your support means the world to us. We are a completely non-profit organisation. This means that 100% of the funds raised by the Rabbit Welfare Foundation through donations, our shop, as well as animal welfare grants, go back into supporting rabbit welfare across the UK, providing better advice and guidance, advocating and campaigning for rabbit rights and making our five year plan dreams come true.

Please help us to raise the funds we need to kickstart the Rabbit Welfare Foundation, and promote the rights, health, welfare and wellbeing of UK rabbits.
