A devastating earthquake has shook the country and its people
At 4:17am on 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye, followed by another damaging earthquake soon afterwards. Many thousands of people have been killed in what seems to be the worst earthquake there in 100 years. Survivors who have been forced to flee their homes are now facing freezing temperatures. It is truly hell on Earth for those effected.
The scale of destruction is vast as shown. Following two big earthquakes and over 60 aftershocks, people are still in shock and fear, they don't even have time to mourn the lost ones.
Up to 80,000 innocent civilians have been injured and an estimated 20,000 dead yet beneath the endless rubble could lie tens of thousands more dead. City upon city has crumbled leaving waste and hence ruining the infrastructure especially in the areas of Gaziantep/ Kahramanmaras. In total 10 cities containing 14 million were hit in which rebuilding could cost billions alone, let alone providing the crucial support for the victims to survive. There is still risk of a secondary disaster through the form of disease and hunger which only intensifies.
My Story
A reason why I feel deeply connected to this awful event was because, despite being a considerable hundreds of miles away, I was in Türkiye when it happened. Scarily in the early hours of the morning, I was awoken having only checked into my hotel hours before by sudden banging and shaking. Hangers and walls were slamming around and I slowly managed to get myself to sit up straight whilst my head spun. Soon after I had discovered the tragic news. It was only a minute of constant shaking for me but for the victims, it was a catastrophic nightmare and I feel great empathy having experienced a fraction of the earthquake.
I personally know friends who have relatives and friends who have been affected and this further saddened me more after conversations with people in my hotel in Antalya. Information of their homes being destroyed or losing a family member was a regular talk. With kind donations, I seek to do my best to send over as much money and supplies as possible in order to aid those in need no matter who they may be. Clean water, medical supplies, clothes, food, toiletries, nappies, baby milk and the list goes on. The money raised will be sent as soon as possible to people working tirelessly who are distributing the crucial supplies.
Although you do not know who will be helped by a donation, they will be extremely grateful for your good deed, more than you know.
