Story

The Kichanga Foundation:
The Kichanga Foundation was set up in 2005 by the Kichanga lodge founders for the purpose of developing the Kichanga people, focusing on local empowerment and sustainable projects.

Being a fishing community, everyone in the Zanzibar community lives from the sea. Despite this, too many of the villagers lack the basic, life saving skill of swimming.

In 2016, the Foundation started an AMAZING programme. The Swimming Programme. Teaching children and adults how to swim, the Swimming Programme is protecting and enhancing the lives of everyone involved.

Rachel's Story:
Having swam from a very young age and worked as a lifeguard at the age of 19, I can not begin to imagine living and working from the sea, yet not being able to also experience the enjoyment and self-confidence that swimming can give. This is such a basic skill that I believe EVERYONE should have - even if you don't enjoy it!

In August 2017 I will be swimming 2 miles/ 3.2km in Scotland's beautiful (chilly) Loch Lomond, with the Great Swim 2017 event.

I am hoping to raise awareness of the essential, and mostly voluntary work, that the very small team at The Kichanga Foundation are doing... And if I can raise some money along the way, so that the volunteers can actually focus less on trying to scrape money together and more on improving the life of the Zanzibar community, then my work here is done.

If you can donate even just 15p (LESS THAN A FREDDO BAR), every little really does help.

For more information you can visit The Kichanga Foundation's website at www.kichangafoundation.org

All proceeds (minus minimal processing fees from JustGiving) raised through my JustGiving page will go directly to The Kichanga Foundation.
