Story

Hi everyone, my name is Rachel and I'm 16 years old, meaning I am in my final year of secondary school. I have set up this fundraising page in hope of raising £2500 to support my up and coming role as a volunteer in Cambodia, South East Asia. This is an adventure that I am very excited to undertake as it will both mark the end of my GCSE exams and also allow me to discover a new and completely different culture.

Now you may be thinking, why would I donate money for a 16 year old to go on holiday?

However, let me assure you that this intensive, two week trip is far from a holiday! I shall be living and working in the capital, Phnom Penh where my role as a volunteer shall include: playing educational games with children, teaching English and partaking in painting and decorating projects to improve conditions in care centres. My goal is to improve the conditions within the local community and to support and inspire the young children whom I meet.

Due to its colourful past, including the Cambodian civil war which ended in 1975, Cambodia is now one of the poorest countries in the world - with over 70% of employed people living on less that £2.37 every day! So I believe that this is a country where we can make a huge impact.

My family and I have supported Tibetan refugees in Nepal for many years and I have therefore been able to see first hand the difference that individuals, like you and I, can make in helping underprivileged communities. In order for me to help provide these services and make a change I require £2500, and that is where you can really help! I am asking for anyone to give as little or as much as you would like, enabling me to help those in need.

Below I have attached a copy of the confirmation letter from the company, Projects Abroad, whom I am travelling with. I'll make sure I add photos here from the trip so you can join me on this amazing journey of discovery.

Projects Abroad Official Letter

To whom it may concern:

This is to confirm that Miss Rachel Adshead-Grant is to work for Projects Abroad in Cambodia for 2 weeks from 8 July 2018. Miss Rachel Adshead-Grant will be working voluntarily and will be receiving no pay.

Rachel Adshead-Grant will be living and working in a local community in Cambodia, making a valuable contribution to our work in this field. Miss Rachel Adshead-Grant will also receive a unique insight and experience in various aspects of that kind of work in a developing country.

Rachel's precise role will be determined by specific interests and abilities. Rachel will certainly be able to take part at grass roots level in projects and programmes which are really needed and make a difference in Cambodia.

Rachel needs financial support to help fund the subsistence while working in Cambodia and to fund the necessary charges made by Projects Abroad which will organise the placement and provide necessary support and back-up. Rachel also needs to fund the flights out and back.

Your sponsorship would be greatly appreciated and would not be wasted. Through Rachel Adshead-Grant you would be making a very practical contribution in Cambodia.

Yours sincerely

DR PETER M SLOWE (Director)
