Story

My local watering hole is Earley Radstock Social Club, and recently, our handsome bar manager, Martin, lost his brother-in-law to a heart problem. Now there are three devices within 100 yards of The Club that can potentially save someone who suffers a Cardiac Arrest. Unfortunately, when the club is open, two of these devices are locked up as they’re in a school, and the third may well be out and about working with me and the guys from Beyond First Aid. So, the plan is to purchase another Automatic External Defibrillator to hang outside the club for public access.

To give you some incentive to make you part with your hard earned, I’m going to walk to the club in Radstock.

“What kind of challenge is that?” I hear you shout at your phone. Well, I may live next to the club, but I’m walking from the ‘other’ Radstock. The one where the local school got its logo, the one where a mahoosive dragonfly fossil was found, the one in fact that Radstock Lane in Reading gets its name from. I shall be walking from Radstock in Somerset (Near Bath) to Radstock Lane in Reading. 74.4 miles if you’re interested, it’s still 74.4 miles if you’re not actually. People have walked greater distances I know. I do however intend to make it hard for myself.

Next Sunday (27th may 2108) I’m going to hop on a train to Swindon, change there for Bath Spa. When I get there, it’s a short bus ride to Radstock (the Somerset one) After a bite to eat, I’m heading East, on foot, and I’m going to keep going until it gets dark. After a night in the ‘Two Trees Hotel’ aka my hammock, I’ll be having a breakfast of whatever I find lurking in the bottom of my rucksack, and off walking again. This time, apart from comfort breaks and eating, I’m not stopping until I get to the club. Yes, you read that correctly. 74.4 miles (still) in under 35 hours.

With your support, hopefully we can get an AED for the club, and the surrounding public. Hopefully it sits there gathering dust, and is never used, but if just one person’s life is saved because it is available then my aching feet will have earned a soak, and that pint Alan is going to buy me will taste ever so much sweeter. Didn’t I mention that bit? Sorry Alan 😊
