Story

The shirt I wear for my day job has a Dragonfly as its logo, but nobody seemed to know why, so I made it my mission to find out about this beast. Turns out, Radstock Primary School, or rather Radstock Lane in Reading, is named after a former colliery town in Somerset. A town famous for a fossil of a dragonfly with a wingspan of half a meter, and the largest insect to ever have taken to the air.

Having found out about it, I was keen to go and see for myself where this 300million year old creature came from. Then I hear that it's Walk to School week. So...

Me being me, puts 2 and 2 together and comes up with 74.4

So I'm going to Walk to School and raise money for the school's parent teacher association, Friends of Radstock.

“What kind of challenge is that?” I hear you shout at your phone. "You live next to the school!"

Well, I may live next to the school, but I’m walking from the ‘other’ Radstock. The one where the school got its logo, the one where a huge dragonfly fossil was found, the one in fact that Radstock Lane in Reading gets its name from. I shall be walking from Radstock in Somerset (Near Bath) to Radstock Lane in Reading. 74.4 miles if you’re interested, it’s still 74.4 miles if you’re not actually. People have walked greater distances I know. I do however intend to make it hard for myself.

Next Sunday (27th may 2108) I’m going to hop on a train to Swindon, change there for Bath Spa. When I get there, it’s a short bus ride to Radstock (the Somerset one) After a bite to eat, I’m heading East, on foot, and I’m going to keep going until it gets dark. After a night in the ‘Two Trees Hotel’ aka my hammock, I’ll be having a breakfast of whatever I find lurking in the bottom of my rucksack, and off walking again. This time, apart from comfort breaks and eating, I’m not stopping until I get to the school. I intend to have a pint before closing time on Monday night in the club nextdoor to the school. Yes, you read that correctly. 74.4 miles (still) in under 35 hours.

With your support, hopefully we can raise much needed funds for Friends of Radstock 😊
