More than thirty years ago, my grandfather and a group of volunteers known as the Rainbow Rovers drove aid convoys from the UK to the Saharawi refugee camps in the Algerian desert, delivering vital supplies to families displaced from their homeland in Western Sahara. Next October, I hope to revive that mission by leading a new Rainbow Rovers convoy across Europe and North Africa, carrying practical aid directly to the camps. Every penny raised will be used to purchase equipment and materials that help create lasting opportunities, including food-growing infrastructure, sports equipment, educational resources, and supplies for community-led projects. Rather than providing short-term relief alone, our aim is to support initiatives that strengthen resilience, empower young people, and improve everyday life for one of the world's longest-forgotten refugee communities. By filling a convoy of vehicles with meaningful, targeted aid, we hope to honour the legacy of those original journeys while building a new chapter of solidarity with the Saharawi people.
