Story

St John the Baptist Church

This beautiful and peaceful parish church sitting high on a natural promontory serves as both a place of worship and a focal point for local community activities in the tiny village of Ashton, Devon.

Listed Grade 1, it is mentioned in many reference books as a fine example of a 15th Century Perpendicular Church with outstanding historical features including a collection of important medieval paintings, woodwork and stained glass.”

But as well as being an important historic building, the church plays a central role in village life. Services average two each month and the small local congregation is swelled on the usual Feast days and for celebrations. Within a beautiful setting, it is also a popular venue for weddings and celebrations.

With local support, the church is usually economically self-sufficient for routine maintenance and the congregation have a sound record of giving to charities. Unfortunately the tower roof is now in very poor condition and leaking water into the building which is putting the fabric of the building at risk of permanent damage. The repairs extend far beyond the limited funds of the local parishioners so we are appealing to the wider community to help us raise funds for the necessary repairs.

We hope you can find a few spare pounds to help us keep this wonderful building safe for another few generations to come.

Thank you.
