My amazing big sister survived cancer twice in the space of 4 years.
She was 29 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer , I was 27. This is the start of my story.
The closeness between us and the love growing up was magical. Looking back we grew up doing everything together and we wouldn't have had it any other way.
I shall never forget the day when I was sat with her & the consultant and we were told the lump is cancerous. My feelings towards the future became numb. From then on in kicked the fear, panic, uncertainty, emotion and more than anything, searching for the strength that was going to be needed to get her through this.
I remember the thoughts of I can't cry, I'm not the one with cancer, she needs me, be strong. My poor big sis. I was so scared inside for her and seeing my parents feeling the same was very hard.
Every step of the way she was amazing, brave and inspirational.
I was holding back tears and keeping fear locked away.
I didn't think I could cope, I didn't know who I was, I didn't feel I was anywhere; yet I was coping, I was still me, living it with her and whatever cancer had to throw her way.
It then came back and we went through it all again. Although harder and tougher the journey was lived with all the same feelings and emotions. I get how living with cancer impacts on your life.
Cancer and me is a project to take some release away from living with cancer.
To bring, strength, love, support and belief to the lives of people who are going through treatment or standing along side as the carer.
To ensure people living with cancer remember it's ok to have some you time and it's ok to take yourself away from it.
Whether it's a spa day away with your best friend, a weekend away with someone close, a rugby match with the lads or a fun kids trip.
This fund will go towards creating these times for amazing people. Love, release, support and belief.
