I'm raising £3000 to fund free cataract surgeries in India

Story

I am currently trekking to Everest Base Camp in Nepal in March–April 2026 to raise funds for a cause very close to my heart — restoring sight for patients in need.

This is a demanding Himalayan journey over approximately 14–15 days, often involving 7–8 hours of walking each day at high altitude. Having previously undertaken treks in the Himalayas, I have always found them deeply meaningful — not only as physical challenges, but also as a way of building resilience, gratitude and perspective.

I have now completed the first 3 days of the trek and will continue sharing updates from the trail.

This journey feels especially significant to me after a series of major health challenges over the past two years, including knee surgery, a heart attack in April 2024, and shoulder surgery. Taking on Everest Base Camp now is both a personal challenge and an opportunity to support something truly worthwhile.

As a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, I see every day how life-changing cataract surgery can be. A short operation can restore independence, dignity and quality of life almost instantly.

During my visit to Rotary Eye Hospital, Dharashiv, Maharashtra, India, (https://www.rotarysevatrust.org), I saw first-hand the remarkable work being done to restore sight for patients who cannot afford treatment.

Through this trek, I hope to raise funds to support a free cataract surgery camp at Rotary Eye Hospital, Dharashiv, India.

£30 can fund one cataract surgery.

My goal is to raise £3,000, which could help restore sight for 100 people.

This fundraiser is also part of a Prayag Vision Foundation initiative to support accessible eye care for underserved communities.

Please note: this is a personal fundraising page, and all funds raised will be personally transferred by me to support this cataract surgery initiative at Rotary Eye Hospital, Dharashiv, India. I will also share updates from the trek and the impact of your support.

If you are able to support this cause, I would be truly grateful. Every donation, no matter how small, can help change someone’s life through the gift of sight.

Thank you so much for being part of this journey.
