This crowdfunder is to help Shay's family in their test case against Serco, a global corporation contracted by the Home Office to provide asylum accommodation. The case is part of a wider campaign to change conditions in the controversial 'contingency hotels' now - and to push for removal of Serco's Home Office contract in the long-term. Please help us to fund Shay's family's transport and accommodation costs in this very important test case that could help everyone housed in contingency hotels.
Political refugee Shay Babagar began hunger striking on the 2nd of November to expose the treatment and conditions at Serco-managed contingency hotels housing people seeking asylum. Both RAPAR and the local authority covering the area have expressed deep concerns about conditions at the hotel.
Shay took this drastic action for 35 days because his complaints, and those of others who have been stuck in the hotels for up to two years in some cases, were largely being ignored. Shay stopped his strike to avoid irreversible physical damage to his body. Now, refusing to return to the Serco-managed hotel where they say they were treated inhumanely and assaulted, Shay, his wife and child are in temporary accomodation, funded by this crowdfunder.
We have set up this crowdfunder as part of a wider campaign to change conditions in Serco-run hotels now - and to push for the removal of the Home Office's contract with Serco - this campaign with Shay's family is a very important test case that could help everyone housed in contingency hotels. Please help us to enable Shay and his family find safety and justice by raising money here for travel and accommodation costs.
