Story
My mother graduated in BSc Biology and has been working as an excellent home-maker 24/7 for nearly 40 years to support her family of 12 members (joint-family).
While being a home-maker is an extremely rewarding and important role, her one wish is to earn money from work outside of the family home. For her, earning money would mean being independent, autonomous and feeling empowered.
My mother turns 60 next year and no present I buy could give her what she wishes. Instead, I want to give her the opportunity for her to earn. She is currently visiting from India, a prime opportunity to fulfil this wish: a new environment, away from the family home and away from her busy role as a home-maker.
We are organising a charity curry lunch box on Friday,17th August 2018 in Newcastle, offering a home cooked Indian spread for £6 per curry box.
My mother has decided to donate all her earnings to three women in India. Indu, Ganga and Gautma all work as house-helpers in India, earning a daily wage of £1.60 for 12 hours’ work.
Indy (left) has been woking since the age of 15 to be able to save money for her wedding dowry (still a prevalent practise in villages), making it possible for her to get married. The money would make a significant contribution to her savings. Ganga (middle) and Gautma (right) were married young and now work to support their families. The money would enable Ganga and Gautma to pay for a year’s education for their children.
The target is £200 so our aim is to sell 30 lunch boxes. If we can all reach the target, the donations will go directly to Indu, Ganga and Gautma.
