Story
We are a team of volunteers working with the Red Box Project, this simple and wonderful scheme aims to support young women in their education by providing them with free sanitary products.
A recent survey but Plan UK found that 1 in 10 girls aged 14 to 21 can’t afford menstrual products, and that half of all schoolgirls miss a full day of school because of their period. The Red Box Project aims to tackle this issue with a community based approach, giving schools a red box full of sanitary products that girls can access via their school nurse or another nominated female staff member.
The box will have our contact details inside it, once those contact details are visible (i.e. the box is half empty) the school staff can call us and we will refill the box within 2 days. We also make sure the box is sign posted through changing rooms and toilets so girls know exactly what to do when they need to access sanitary products. We believe this access is a human right and no young women should be missing school owing to embarrassment or financial situations.
As this is a community project led by volunteers we will need support from local people and businesses to keep the boxes topped up. This might be by having a donations box (money or sanitary products) within your business or by simply donating on our just giving page. Periods aren't going anywhere and neither are we - but we need your help!
Thank you for all your support!
