Story

From evening lessons under a tree, we want to move to a standard 3-classroom school. Dutsen-wai is a community in Northern Nigeria, where over 90% of its kids have never been to a school and may never attend one. I am currently teaching about 35 kids under a tree in this community and we are depending on you to move to a proper school. The kids are eager to learn and only you can help us build a low-cost 3-classroom school

Growing up in Dutsen-wai has enabled me to appreciate the impact western education has in ones life. Dutsen-wai, a small town with a population of about 22,000 has about 95 illiteracy rate and less than 1% has gone beyond secondary school.

SCHOOLS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN URBAN AREAS AT AN EXORBITANT RATE, AWAY FROM THE REACH OF KIDS FROM RURAL AND POOR HOUSEHOLDS IN DUTSEN-WAI.

These kids have been on the receiving end of this brutality called illiteracy, dreams are been tarnished, terrorist are made, criminals are molded, girls are married off at early ages. Girl's here marry as early as 12, 13 14 and as late as 15, only few lucky ones attend school before marriage. http://www.girlsnotbrides.org/where-does-it-hap...

I am now back to Dutsen-wai, teaching little boys and girls every evening. I teach kids who don't attend school; simple mathematics and English. Everyday the kids keep getting much and there is need for us to build a low cost school.

The kids really want to learn and there are more kids who want to join our free evening lessons. My Dad has decided to lend us a parcel of land and we are soliciting for your help to build low cost 3-classroom school. These kids deserve to be in school and only us can make this happen.

MY STORY

Allow me to tell you a little about my personal life. My parents gave birth to me in Dutsen-wai. I was however opportune to attend a school in a city (Zaria) about 70km from home. My friends who were not opportune to attend schools in the city had to make do with the poor education from the only available secondary school in a settlement of over 20,000 inhabitants. After my education,(secondary and university). October 2016, i came back to Dutsen-wai, paid a visit to a teacher-friend (who works in the only available secondary school), and I witnessed how students in ss3 (grade12) could not read simple sentences. Students there receive about 2hours lessons most days, and other days no lesson at all.

My childhood friends have all gone back to the occupation of their fathers; farming with crude implements. Some are even married to underage girls who in turn have given birth to kids and the illiteracy cycle again continues.

I started teaching this kids under a tree from late October and we have since move to my house due to rainfall. I currently teach about 35 boys and girls and there are more kids who want to join us. we also have a 15yr old married girl among us.

You can help us achieve our dream of building a low cost 3-classroom school in Dutsen-wai. You can help us achieve our dream of making affordable education accessible to kids in Dutsen-wai. A school where children will have equal access to education, irrespective of their religion, gender, financial capability, location or ethnicity. The school has been design in such a way to accommodate 150 students. You can make education accessible to 150 students. Yes 150 kids depend on you to help them fulfill their dream.

What We Need & What You Get

After carefully analyzing the total cost of building a low cost school and maintaining it for a year, we arrived at 10,000

STAFF QUALIFICATION AND WELFARE

Our teaching staff will have the minimum qualification of Nigeria certificate of Education(NCE). We will periodically conduct staff in-service-training.

Salary structure will be based on the state Govt. stipulated minimum wage of $60 a month. staffs will take home between $70 and $150 a month.

Since we will be outsourcing some of our teaching staff from Zaria-a city about 70km away, we are currently in talks with some families to provide accommodation for some of our staff. Shuttling between Zaria and Dutsen-wai daily is not a good idea.

SCHOOL FEES STRUCTURE

BOYS will pay ;$25 per term, while

GIRLS will pay as low as $20 per term, At our school we want to encourage especially the families to send their girls to us by lowering the tuition fee.

Many girls in this rural area do not attend school during their monthly period due to very high cost of sanitary pads and cultural issues, we plan to curtail this by distributing sanitary pads for free.
