Story

Read Easy Leeds is part of the Read Easy UK network, a national charity that formed in 2010 to help adults learn to read.

We know from speaking with agencies across Leeds that our area has many adults who struggle with reading. It has far reaching effects, can hinder employment, make supporting children's learning difficult and has a serious pull on wellbeing and mental health.

There can be a great deal of shame associated with poor reading skills and many adults will hide their issues and avoid asking for help. If it is picked up currently many would be referred to a classroom environment which for someone with low self esteem is incredibly challenging.

We do things differently, we meet our readers 1-to-1 in safe and trusted spaces, such as the library or a community centre, we work in short sessions, just half an hour at a time and we take things at our readers own pace, for up to two years. We do all of this for Free!

We are volunteers and rely on fundraising to carry out our work, to buy reading manuals and books and to train our reading coaches. Please consider donating whatever you can afford to help us keep running.

Good reading skills are about more than reading a book, it improves confidence, helps people to cope better with day to day life, and encourages a more cohesive community that supports everyone.
