Story

As most of you are aware, I made the decision to visit Cambodia during my travels and volunteer at a school and orphanage located in rural Cambodia a few hours south of Phnom Penh. As soon as we arrived, I realised that what the school does here is something incredibly special. Within the first few days we were visting the local families who rely on the school for food donations, the orphanage where the majority of the 30 kids there have families but sadly there are unable to afford looking after them and we were placed into classes teaching, where majority of the students are part of poor families who have to help their parents out in the rice fields either before or after school. I originally planned to be here for 3 weeks but soon into my first week I knew I would be extending my stay for 6 weeks as no amount of time here is long enough. I can‘t explain how much the volunteers both past and present do for the school, there are weekly fundraisers that happen here where we raise money for the food bank families, bicycles for the children who have to walk miles everyday to school, school shirts for the kids who turn up everyday with dirty and stained ones and supplies for the orphanage kids such as feminine hygeine products for the older girls. Past donations have even managed to build new houses for some of the food bank families and one donation was able to buy a new wheelchair for one of the orphans called Kong Kia who suffers from cerebral palsy. The staff, volunteers and community here are thankful for any donation they recieve however big or small, for people who have either been through such hardship or live with so little, they are some of the most sweetest, grateful people I have ever met. We have come over here to help change these peoples lives but its really them who end up changing yours. A little goes a long way :)
