Weʼve raised £730 to help establish a zero waste shop in Market Harborough

    Story

I‘d known for some time that as a family there was much more we could, and should be doing to reduce food and packaging waste, especially single use plastic. Being on maternity leave gave me the headspace to really think about what we could do, and to implement some big changes... or so I thought!

Fairly quickly, (and after a row with my husband about the pros and cons of milk delivery), I realised it really wasn’t as simple as it seemed. I became extremely aware of everything I was putting into the bin and increasingly disheartened and frustrated when I realised that busy lives, supermarket shopping and reducing waste don’t go hand in hand.

I then came across the amazing work of places like the Zero Waste Shop in Totnes and realised that this was exactly what my family, and Market Harborough needed.

I have now invested a significant chunk of my savings and launched Refill Revolution as a pop up shop. I have been overwhelmed by the support, and demand from the local community. It is my mission to make it easier for us all to make simple changes to reduce our food and packaging waste, and to change the way we shop. I am more motivated than ever to offer competitive pricing, and a personal and reliable service to my customers so that together, we can kick plastic’s bottom and establish a more sustainable way of living.

I would love to generate some more of the funds needed to support Refill Revolution to reach its potential and become a permanent, regular fixture on our high street . Amongst other things, and in no particular order, we need another set of scales, pan and protective travel case (approx. £400), an additional card reader (approx £70), more and bigger jars (approx.£150), storage (approx. £100 per month), a van/trailer (approx £lots!) and the funds to rent a more permanent premises (approx £10k for one year). Every amount donated will go towards one or more of these items.

Supporting Refill Revolution will not only mean that you are helping an independant, local business to flourish, but it will also show the rest of the UK, and the world, that communities can change their shopping habits and reduce the hideous amount of waste we create. We will be leading by example and putting Market Harborough on the map as a plastic free community!

I’ve been meaning to post an update here for a while. Thanks to your generosity I’ve managed to improve the set up of the shop so that we can serve more people, more quickly. We’ve now got two sets of scales and two till-points which is fab. The remaining investment is going towards transport to get me to and from the market. The search is fully on for a vehicle so watch this space. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram to get regular updates, and you can always email me - beth@refillrevolution.co.uk

We’re almost at 20% and with only a few hours left to go to reach my target. I’d love to raise the funds to help me to secure more practical logistics for Refill Revolution. I’m currently using my dining room for storage and renting out the unit at the market on a casual basis. My family car is currently my only way of getting things to and from the market - it’s not practical and means I’m limited by what I can fit in. Thank you so much to those of you who have already donated.
