Story
Support Ninoska and her four young daughters after until she is obtains justice and is reinstated in her job at Rockmount Primary School.
Ninoska Moreta was a cleaner at Rockmount Primary School, employed by the subcontractor Aqua Blue Cleaning. She worked in 5 classrooms in the nursery area, hoovering, taking out the rubbish, dusting, and cleaning the sinks. Ms Moreta was an integral member of the Rockmount School Community.
In October last year, Ms Moreta was hit by a car while on her way to Rockmount. It was her day off, so she didn't need to be at work, but her supervisor called her in for deep cleaning. She suffered a tibial plateau fracture and had to undergo surgery. On 22 December, 2020, in the midst of the pandemic and while she was recovering from this traumatic event, Aqua Blue Cleaning dismissed Ms Moreta.
Aqua Blue Cleaning claimed that the company was "facing a difficult time taking the current climate and staffing requirements into consideration". But Ms Moreta did not qualify for Statutory Sick Pay; her sick leave came at no extra cost to Aqua Blue Cleaning.
At any time, but particularly in a pandemic, the hygiene and cleanliness of school spaces should be an absolute priority. There is no justifiable reason for her dismissal.
We have raised this with Rockmount Primary School management already, but they have directed us to Aqua Blue Cleaning, the subcontractor, who in turn have refused to take action. As ever, outsourcing is used as an excuse for employers to wash their hands of responsibility for the workers on their premises.
Ms Moreta supports 4 young daughters of school age and has been forced to resort to Universal Credit, leaving her very worried about the future. As her fellow union members, we have set up this crowd-funder. Help us support her in this difficult time until she is reinstated!
