Help Saied Walk Again After Surviving War Injuries

💔 A life shattered by war, a spine in desperate need of surgery — and a chance to restore normal life. Please help us raise funds to cover Saied’s urgent spinal operation.

📸 A Note on Photos

Out of respect for Saied’s privacy, we are not sharing his personal photo. He is a man of quiet dignity who has endured years of hardship without ever asking for help — and this step has not been easy for him. To support this campaign and honour his story, I’ve chosen to share some of my own photos instead. I hope they help bring his experience closer to your heart.

Why I’m Telling This Story

My name is Maimouna. I am currently resident in the UK. I lived with my family under siege in Eastern Ghouta, Syria, from 2013 until we were forcibly displaced in 2018. Like many, I witnessed unimaginable suffering and survival during the years of bombardment, hunger, and loss. One of those stories is deeply personal — it’s the story of my relative, Saied, a kind-hearted man in his 50s, whose life was forever changed during the final assault on Ghouta in early 2018.

This video clip below was filmed by me, after the bombing on our building in Eastern Ghouta on the 12th of October 2016 when I miraculously survived with my daughter Emar, 5 yrs.

The video shows a side from the massive destruction in the ground floor and the back garden of the building as well as the surrounding buildings.

This time, our beautiful plants and lovely turtles were shattered and totally suffocated under the rubble — not mentioning here the tragic loss of friends and neighbours in other bombing raids throughout the siege.

What you see in the video doesn't capture the full extent of the devastation — Saied’s home was completely crushed under its own roof after the bombings on his area in 2018.

Injured While Escaping Bombardment

Saied is a father and craftsman from Eastern Ghouta. Before the war, he lived a modest but peaceful life with his family. When the siege and bombings intensified during the final military campaign on Ghouta in 2018, everything changed. While fleeing one of the strikes that destroyed his home, Saied sustained a devastating injury — a concussion to his spinal cord, along with a dislocated shoulder and fractured scapula. Doctors told him he had barely escaped full paralysis.

Even after receiving medical care, he continued to experience numbness and severe pain in his legs. After being forcibly displaced — along with tens of thousands of others, including me and my family — life didn’t get easier. A surgery meant to help Saied went wrong, leaving him in constant pain ever since.

For over two and a half years now, Saied has been trapped in a body that no longer gives him peace. He’s not giving up, but he needs help to access proper medical care and reclaim a normal life.

Why We Need Your Help Now

Saied’s life has been shaped by loss. His family has endured years of displacement and poverty. One of his sons was killed in the war. Saied lives with relentless pain that painkillers and physiotherapy work no more.

Doctors have confirmed he needs urgent corrective spinal surgery to remove the faulty hardware and insert stabilizing components. Without it, his condition could lead to full paralysis. The procedure which is possible in a private clinic costs $2,000. With service fees, and required medical assessments and care before and after the surgery we are seeking to raise $3073 (£2300) in total.

This operation could give Saied back the ability to walk, sleep, and live a normal life after years of suffering — and after losing so much.

🕊️ Why This Matters

In a world that has moved on from Syria’s suffering, stories like Saied’s are a painful reminder of the long-lasting impact of war on individuals and families. This is not just a fundraiser — it’s a call for solidarity, humanity, and hope.

Please help us give Saied the chance to walk, sleep and live normally again.

"He was one of those who never gave up during the siege — always helping others despite the fear and hunger. He deserves the same support now."– Maimouna
