Story

On the 25th of May 2023, our lives changed forever. Mandy Lewis, a loving mum, wife, sister, daughter, aunty, friend and one of life’s truest angels suffered a cardiac arrest whilst doing something she loved. As a family, our lives came crashing down and in the days following, sat by her hospital bed we prayed that a miracle would happen but sadly on the 27th of May she left us peacefully, surrounded by her family.

We were told that her sudden death was unexplained, despite her being fit and healthy with no signs or symptoms and no findings from the post mortem. We were informed that Mandy passed away from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) something that affects approximately 500 people each year in the UK alone.

Anyone that was lucky enough to know Mandy will know that she did anything and everything for everyone but herself. Caring for her family was her life, now it’s time we did something for her. Her infectious laugh, caring smile, endless love and passion for life (and dancing on the dance floor) will live on in our hearts. She truly will be remembered as our very own ray of sunshine and thats why we would like to raise awareness and maybe a little money along the way; in the hope of saving even just one life and one family from the heartbreak and trauma thats SADS can cause.

We are planning multiple extreme challenges including, parachute jumps, high wire walks, Kilimanjaro and even climbing to the base camp of Everest, to raise money for the amazing British Heart Foundation for further research into SADS. We will also be donating some of the funds raised to the Down’s Syndrome Association - a charity that is close to our hearts and one which Mandy passionately supported each and every year, to ensure children born with Down’s Syndrome can live a fulfilled life without obstacles. She dedicated much of her time to her gorgeous son Harry, who is a wonderful example of how someone living with Down’s Syndrome can live a truly amazing life.

Although she was taken from us way too soon, we know that if she was still here she would be cheering us on and making all the noise at the finish line. She would want answers and from your donations big or small, with further research that is something that can be worked towards. Her precious heart is being studied by a leading cardiac pathologist Professor Mary Sheppard from St Georges University of London, in order to gain some answers. Her DNA is also being looked at as part of a pilot scheme to explore the likelihood of SADS being hereditary within our family.

We will keep this page updated with our progress and any other fund raising events. Mandy was always up for a challenge and so are we!

Thank you for all and any donations that anyone gives, it really does mean the world for your support.

As a family, we are already working on more fundraising events throughout the next 12 months to hopefully raise another £10,000 for our special charities, in Mums memory. As these fundraising events take place, we’ll keep this page updated for all to see as we are so proud of what has been done and can’t wait for what is to come.

Yesterday morning Barnfield Construction Ltd held their annual Barnfield V Contractors match at Turf Moor, despite the rain🌧️⚽ This year, they chose to have The Mandy Lewis Foundation as one of their charities to support. The money raised through this event meant we reached out £10,000 target within 11 months of opening our Just Giving page, which is a huge milestone for us all. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in this match and also everyone who has supported us over the last 11 months to help us reach this incredible amount.

Over the last 6 months we’ve been busy visiting The Manchester Heart Centre at St Mary’s Hospital undergoing testing which included an ECG, Echocardiogram, 24 hour tape monitor & an exercise test. Luckily, through this testing, it has highlighted a minor defect in 2 family members that can be monitored going forwards however this does not relate to Mandy’s passing.
