Story

I was introduced to The Royal Marsden in 2017. My boyfriend at the time, Tayler was diagnosed with diffuse B cell non Hodgkins lymphoma. It would be the start of a 2 year on and off fight with their help to keep him with us all.

The team, our bud Flanagan family were exceptional. I can't fault them enough. In 2019, life turned upside down. What was meant to be a routine check up, turned into a living nightmare. It started in Chelsea where Tayler (Tay) was blue lighted from his clinic due to poor saturations. Induced into a coma for a week, the Marsden were with me and our families every step of the way. That included when we lost Taylers mother, Karen during our stay in Chelsea. They supported us, Tayler especially on how to deal with the trauma and stress of loosing his mum, his rock to putting all his effort into getting better and more importanlty, getting home.

We were transferred back to Sutton where we were on the tracks of recovery, new treatment, learning to walk and talk again. Learning to live. Amongst all the hardship, stress and everything cancer throws at a young person, we decided to get married. We got married on the 12th July 2019 and who planned our wedding? The Marsden. From the cooks, the cleaners, HCAs, doctors and nurses, they created a buzz around the ward as they were so excited for us. I remember it being a hot summers day, that summer was incredibly hot to be honest but, perhaps that was because we were in a hospital room that year. There was no expense spared for our day, we had everything we wanted. We couldn't ask for more, I even had the nurses put Ed Sheeran on so I could walk down the corridor of the ward as my 'isle' arm in arm with my dad. We lived in 'wedded bliss' planning our honeymoon for when he was coming home.

Sadly, he never came home.

8th August 2019, life changed. We'd already been dealt with loosing Karen but we were told that the treatment was 'no longer working' and that the lymphoma had spread, scattered down all his lungs, in his diaphram. It was everywhere.

We learnt to enjoy the time we had, playing Mario cart in his room - some nights with the nurses. The team were always there, always holding our hands, as a young couple who should have spent their lives together they knew we needed them. Not as patients but as people. The staff have this special skill, a super power where they just sit and listen. There's no judgement, there's just support. That's what we had until the 11th September at 08:32pm surrounded by family, holding my hand. My beautiful, kind, generous and loving Tayler left this world for the next.

You would think that because their patient had passed. The support would stop.

It didn't. It continued.

The nurses kept contact, came to the funeral.

The support was still there but from a different angle. A human angle. Support for me and Jordan, Taylers brother.

There aren't enough words for what I express for how they looked after us, I will forever be in debt to them. They are such special human beings that they all deserve the recognition.

I will forever be grateful for them for giving us, particularly Tay the most beautiful final months of his short 27 years on this earth.

For him, this is to raise money in his name as I know he was grateful for everything they did for him. They never gave up.

So thank you, thank you so much

Taylers legacy has always been about raising awareness about lymphoma and it will be my role now, as his widow to continue his fight to ensure no young person has to experience the push back to get a diagnosis and to also understand the WHY in why young people get cancer.
