Story
Lorraine, one of our volunteers, is taking on a 61km charity walk (from Dartmouth to Exmouth on the South West Coast Path) in June to support our beloved Repair Cafe Tang - our community initiative that helps local people in York repair, reuse, and reduce waste instead of throwing things away.
If you'd like to support the walk by donating or perhaps by sharing this link that would be fabulous - it would mean a lot as it's a long way and there's been mention of "strenuous"!
We set up Repair Cafe Tang based at the Tang Hall Community Centre in York as a new initiative in July 2025 and it has been welcomed by the local community. We're already reducing waste and helping people to save money by repairing their broken or damaged items instead of discarding them in landfill and bringing the community together in a positive way.
We've already tackled toasters, kettles, numerous textiles repairs, such as zips in school coats, mends to rucksacks and have supported our local Food Circle York market with mends to their pasteuriser and weighing scales! We have gathered a welcoming community of fixers and customers of all income levels, ages and ethnic backgrounds which we're really keen to foster.
We receive a small ward grant from York City Council but need to raise funds to keep us fixing into 2026/27 so any donations are really appreciated.
We want to show that a broken item doesn't have to mean the end, with a bit of know-how we can all do our bit for the planet. We want to grow and develop in 2026 and we have a fantastic and skilled group of volunteer fixers with hopefully others joining us this year.
We will always operate a free service but any "pay-as-you-feel" donations are invaluable in keeping us fixing. Thank you!
